BRANCHING OUT
Boulder, CO
City of Boulder Forestry Strategic Plan
Two Forks Collective (TFC) was contracted by the City of Boulder to engage the public in their Urban Forest Strategic Plan. TFC has been working alongside the Boulder Forestry Division and Davey Resource Group to better understand the challenges and opportunities that are facing the Boulder tree canopy; and how to get the public more involved in the overall care and growth of that canopy.

In order to better engage the public, we wanted to develop a name and campaign for the overall tree canopy efforts that could grow into the future. The naming exercise landed us on "Branching Out" as a way to signify the efforts of outreach and the desire for this plan to grow out into the community.
In an effort to reconnect the public to “trees” we created story stations for people to submit poems, drawings and personal stories about trees. Stations were set up at a variety of events, the Boulder Recreation Centers, and at the Main Library Seeds Cafe. We’ve received over 100 pictures, poems and input from people of all ages reflecting the community of Boulders unique connection to their public trees.
Our first public meeting was hosted at the Rayback Collective. We think if we are asking people to engage in a civic duty, there should at least be cold beer and food close by. The event was well attended, and we were able to successfully attract a demographic (20-35 year olds) that in past efforts department outreach efforts were notoriously hard to capture. Several stations were designed and placed throughout the common area for interaction, education and feedback.
